Haghartsin Monastery: a medieval gem among the forests of Tavush

Haghartsin Monastery is one of the most beautiful and best-preserved monastic complexes in Armenia. Located in the Tavush region in the northeast of the country, this ensemble of 10th-century medieval churches and chapels is surrounded by dense beech and oak forests that create an atmosphere of serenity and spirituality rarely found elsewhere in the Caucasus.

History: from the 10th to the 13th century

Haghartsin was founded in the 10th century and progressively expanded until it reached its peak in the 12th and 13th centuries, under the patronage of the Zakarian dynasty, the lords who ruled northern Armenia during that period. The complex was built in stages, with each period adding new churches and structures to the ensemble, which explains the variety of architectural styles that coexist within the monastery.

Architecture: churches, chapels, and gavit

The Haghartsin complex includes three main churches — St. Gregory, Holy Mother of God, and St. Stephen — each with its own character and construction period. The gavit (narthex) of St. Gregory is especially notable for its interior stone decoration. The church facades feature high-quality relief ornamentation and geometric interlacing.

Frescoes and medieval murals

The interiors of Haghartsin's churches preserve fragments of frescoes and murals from different periods, bearing witness to the evolution of Armenian religious iconography. Although many original paintings have been lost over time, those that remain offer a valuable glimpse into the Armenian artistic schools of the Middle Ages.

Recent restoration and conservation

Between 2005 and 2012, the monastery underwent an important restoration project funded by the government of the United Arab Emirates. The work restored roofs, consolidated walls, and improved the surrounding conditions, returning the monastery to a structural integrity that ensures its preservation for future generations.
