Icheri Sheher Walls: Baku's Old City, UNESCO World Heritage Site

The walls of Icheri Sheher —meaning "Inner City" in Azerbaijani— form the physical and historical boundary of Baku's old town. This walled enclosure, whose earliest stones date back to the 12th century, protects the oldest historic core of the Azerbaijani capital and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000.

The stone walls of Icheri Sheher, with their medieval towers and battlements, encircle the Old City of Baku.

History of the Icheri Sheher walls

The current walls were built and expanded between the 11th and 12th centuries, although the enclosure already existed in earlier times. Built from local limestone, they stand between 6 and 8 metres high and are reinforced with defensive towers at the most vulnerable sections. The Maiden Tower Gate (Qız Qalası qapısı) is the main entrance to the complex and one of its most photographed features.

What to see inside the Old City

Within the walls of Icheri Sheher are concentrated Baku's most important monuments:

  • The Maiden Tower (6th–12th centuries), the city's iconic landmark.
  • The Palace of the Shirvanshahs (15th century), also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • The Juma Mosque, from the 12th century.
  • Bazaars, carpet shops, art galleries and Azerbaijani cuisine restaurants.

Architecture and national identity

The walls of Icheri Sheher are far more than stone: they are the symbol of Azerbaijani national identity. They represent Baku's historical continuity as a trade centre on the Caspian Sea and the meeting point of Persian, Turkish, Russian and Caucasian cultures that have shaped Azerbaijan.

How to visit Baku's Old City

The Old City is in the centre of Baku, a short distance from Fountain Square. Entry to the enclosure is free; individual monuments have their own admission prices. Visiting early in the morning is recommended to avoid crowds and capture the golden light on the limestone.
