Mestia: the capital of Svaneti, between medieval towers and Caucasian glaciers
Mestia is no ordinary town. It is a mountain village in the heart of Svaneti, Georgia's most remote and mysterious region, at 1,500 metres altitude surrounded by peaks exceeding 4,000 metres. Its cobblestone streets coexist with Svan medieval towers — koshki — which villagers built centuries ago to defend themselves from invaders and rivals, and which are today the most recognisable symbol of mountain Georgia.
The Svan medieval towers: the symbol of Svaneti
Koshki (Svan towers) are rectangular stone structures 20–25 metres tall that each family built as a refuge and status symbol. Mestia and its neighbouring villages preserve the largest collection of standing medieval towers in Georgia. UNESCO includes them as Cultural Heritage of Svaneti.
The towers also served as archives: families stored their most precious possessions, religious manuscripts and sacred relics in them when invaders arrived. Many of those treasures are preserved today in the Mestia History Museum, a must-visit.

How to get to Mestia
There are two main options:
- Flight: from Tbilisi or Kutaisi with Vanilla Sky (40–50 minutes, in season). The most comfortable option, weather permitting
- Marshrutka from Zugdidi: 4–5 hours along a spectacular mountain road. Morning departures from Zugdidi station
From Tbilisi by private car it takes about 9–10 hours. The drive along the Svaneti road is an experience in itself, with views of the Enguri reservoir and the piedmont forests.
Frequently asked questions
How many days do you need to visit Mestia and Svaneti?
A minimum of 3–4 days to see the essentials: Chalaadi Glacier, the museum, the village and an excursion to the towers of neighbouring villages. For the Mestia–Ushguli trek you need an additional 4–5 days. A full week in Svaneti is ideal.
Is the Mestia–Ushguli trek dangerous?
It is not technically difficult (no climbing equipment needed) but it is a high-mountain route with significant elevation gain and changing conditions. Going with a local guide is recommended, as is carrying suitable gear and checking the weather forecast. Do not do it alone without mountain experience.
When is Svaneti open to visitors?
The main season is June–September. In winter the snow is deep and some villages can be cut off. May and October are intermediate options with fewer tourists and spectacular scenery. Skiing at Hatsvali operates from January to March.
