Roads of the Caucasus: From Georgia to Armenia in 15 Days

A 15-day journey through Georgia and Armenia, two jewels of the Caucasus that hold centuries of history, culture, and ancient traditions. This carefully designed itinerary takes you from the vibrant streets of Tbilisi to the ancient monasteries of Yerevan, passing through stunning mountain landscapes, wine valleys, and cave-carved cities. You'll discover the legendary Caucasian hospitality while exploring medieval fortresses, centuries-old churches, and archaeological sites that have witnessed millennia of civilization.

The tour includes unique experiences such as visiting the Gergeti Monastery with the majestic Mount Kazbegi in the background, exploring the ancient cave city of Vardzia, and tasting wines in the Kvareli region. You'll admire the magnificent religious architecture of Echmiadzin, considered the Armenian Vatican, and marvel at the pagan temple of Garni. The trip perfectly combines cultural heritage, local gastronomy, and natural landscapes, offering a full immersion into the rich heritage of the Caucasus.

Rustaveli Avenue

Avenida Rustaveli Rustaveli Avenue, the main artery of Tbilisi, stretches 1.5 kilometers from Freedom Square to Republic Square. This iconic street, named after the medieval poet Shota Rustaveli, is home to the city's most prestigious buildings, including the Parliament of Georgia, the Opera House, and the National Museum, all built in neoclassical and Art Nouveau styles during the 19th century. During our walk, we'll soak up the vibrant Georgian cultural scene, stop at elegant historic cafés, and admire the monumental architecture while exploring the many shops and art galleries.  

Metekhi Square

Plaza de Metekhi Metekhi Square, one of the most historically iconic spots in Tbilisi, stands on a cliff with stunning views over the Mtkvari River. This landmark is dominated by the 13th-century church and the equestrian statue of King Vakhtang Gorgasali, the legendary founder of the city. During our visit, we'll enjoy panoramic views of the old town and the famous bath district, explore the Metekhi Church, and dive into the fascinating history of the king who established Tbilisi as Georgia's capital.  

Narikala Fortress

Fortaleza Narikala Narikala Fortress, the iconic symbol of Tbilisi, has dominated the city skyline since the 4th century. This ancient citadel, originally Persian and later expanded by Arabs and Georgians, rises on a steep hill with views over the Mtkvari River and the old town. During our visit, we'll ride the cable car up to the fortress, walk the ancient defensive walls, and capture stunning panoramic views of Tbilisi at sunset.  

Abanotubani

Abanotubani Abanotubani, the historic sulphur bath district in the heart of old Tbilisi, is the original core where the Georgian capital was founded. This neighborhood is famous for its distinctive sulphur baths with brick domes rising from the ground, witnessing over 1,500 years of history. Natural thermal waters maintain a constant temperature of 37–40°C and have attracted famous visitors such as Alexander Pushkin and Alexandre Dumas. During our visit, we'll wander through these legendary thermal streets and get lost in the picturesque medieval alleys between the baths.  

Anchiskhati

Anchiskhati The Anchiskhati Basilica, the oldest church in Tbilisi, is a vital testament to Georgia's Christian history since the 6th century. Located in the heart of the old town, this sandstone church dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary takes its name from the miraculous icon of Christ (Anchiskhati) it housed for centuries. During our exploration, we'll experience the mystical atmosphere of the temple, listen to ancient Georgian polyphonic chants, and admire the craftsmanship of the traditional icons.  

Day 3 - Tbilisi - Alaverdi - Nekresi - Kvareli - Telavi

Alaverdi Monastery

Monasterio de Alaverdi Alaverdi Monastery, located in the Kakheti region of Georgia, is an impressive cathedral dating back to the 6th century. This historic site was founded by the monk Joseph of Alaverdi and, in the 11th century, became one of the tallest churches in Georgia with its magnificent dome. Surrounded by vineyards, the monastery is also famous for its winemaking tradition. During our visit, we'll explore the majestic cathedral, learn about its rich history, and enjoy the beauty of the surrounding vineyards. Road 34 km, 0 hours and 36 minutes

Nekresi Monastery

Monasterio de Nekresi Nekresi Monastery, in the Kakheti region of Georgia, is an ancient monastic complex founded in the 4th century, making it one of the oldest Christian centers in the country. Perched on a hill overlooking the Alazani Valley, Nekresi stands out for its early Christian church, rich history, and stunning natural surroundings. During our visit, we'll tour its historic chapels, enjoy panoramic valley views, and soak in the tranquility of this sacred place. Road 12 km, 0 hours and 18 minutes

Khareba Tunnel Winery

Bodega Khareba en tunel Nestled in the heart of the Kakheti region, Khareba Winery boasts an extraordinary tunnel system carved into the Caucasian mountain, stretching over 7.7 kilometers at a depth of 60 meters. Originally built during the Soviet era, this underground labyrinth maintains a constant natural temperature of 12–14°C, creating ideal wine-aging conditions. The winery combines traditional Georgian qvevri winemaking with modern technology. During our visit, we'll explore the mysterious tunnels by torchlight, learn about Georgia's 8,000-year winemaking history, and sample a curated selection of wines. Road 38 km, 0 hours and 37 minutes

Day 4 - Telavi - Ananuri - Gergeti - Gudauri

Ananuri

Ananuri Ananuri, a stunning medieval fortress located 66 kilometers from Tbilisi, rises majestically above the Zhinvali Reservoir on the historic Georgian Military Highway. This 13th-century architectural complex, which served as the seat of the eristavi (dukes) of Aragvi, combines defensive features with extraordinary examples of Georgian religious architecture. During our visit, we'll explore the fortified towers, admire panoramic views of the turquoise reservoir, and discover the secrets of medieval Georgian architecture.  

Gergeti Trinity Church

Trinidad de Gergeti The Gergeti Trinity Church stands majestically at 2,170 meters under the shadow of Mount Kazbegi (5,047 m). This iconic 14th-century church in the historic Khevi region is one of Georgia's most recognizable symbols. During our excursion, we'll drive up the winding mountain track in a 4x4, explore the ancient monastic complex, and take in panoramic views of glaciers and surrounding peaks.  

Day 5 - Gudauri - Uplistsikhe - Gori - Kutaisi

Uplistsikhe

Uplistsikhe Located in the Kartli region of central Georgia, Uplistsikhe is an ancient rock-cut cave city dating back to the first millennium BC. This extraordinary archaeological complex, considered one of the oldest settlements in the Caucasus, was a major religious and commercial center on the historic Silk Road. Its structures include pagan temples, Christian basilicas, and civic buildings. During our visit, we'll explore ancient wine cellars, walk through rock-carved alleys, and marvel at panoramic views of the Mtkvari River.  

Stalin Museum

Museo de Stalin The Stalin Museum in Gori, the birthplace of the controversial Soviet leader, is one of the last museums in the world dedicated to Josef Stalin. The complex includes the original birthplace, a Soviet palace-style building, and Stalin's personal railway carriage. During our visit, we'll explore the halls documenting Stalin's life from his youth in Georgia to his Soviet leadership, examine his armored train carriage, and reflect on the complex historical legacy he left in the region.  

Day 6 - Kutaisi - Bagrati - Gelati - Prometheus Cave - Batumi

Bagrati Cathedral

Catedral de Bagrati Dominating the Kutaisi skyline from Ukimerioni Hill, the majestic Bagrati Cathedral is a masterpiece of medieval Georgian architecture and a symbol of the country's Golden Age. Built during the reign of King Bagrat III in the 11th century, it was partially restored in 2012. During our visit, we'll enjoy spectacular panoramic views of Kutaisi and experience the serenity of this sacred space.

Gelati Academy

Academia de Gelati The Gelati Academy, located in western Georgia near Kutaisi, is one of the most significant cultural centers of the medieval Caucasus. This 12th-century fortified monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was a major center of Georgian education and literature. During our visit, we'll explore the majestic stone buildings and admire the intricate frescoes decorating the walls.

Prometheus Cave

La cueva de Prometeus Prometheus Cave, located near Kutaisi in Georgia, is one of the most impressive and extensive caves in the country. Discovered in 1984, this fascinating underground cavern features vast halls adorned with stalactites, stalagmites, and spectacular rock formations. Visitors can also enjoy a boat ride along the underground river. During our visit, we'll walk the illuminated passages, marvel at the natural formations, and enjoy the boat ride through this serene underground world.

Day 7 - Batumi - Ethnographic Museum - Gonio Fortress

Batumi Ethnographic Museum

The open-air ethnographic museum of Batumi showcases the traditional architecture and way of life of the various peoples of the Adjara region. During our visit, we'll explore authentic wooden houses and learn about the rich cultural diversity of the region.

Gonio Fortress

Gonio Fortress, one of Georgia's oldest fortresses near Batumi, dates from Roman times. According to tradition, the Apostle Matthew is buried here. During our visit, we'll explore the ancient walls and learn about the history of this significant archaeological site.

Day 8 - Batumi surroundings

After breakfast at the hotel, we explore the scenic surroundings of Batumi, the Pearl of the Black Sea. Free day to relax by the sea or explore the city boulevards independently.

Day 9 - Baia's Wine - Borjomi - Akhaltsikhe

After breakfast at the hotel, we begin our adventure. The following visits are planned:

Baia's Wine

Visit the renowned family winery Baia's Wine, known for its natural Georgian wines made in traditional qvevri clay vessels. We experience the fascinating world of Georgian natural wine first-hand.

Borjomi

Bordjomi Nestled in the picturesque Mtkvari Valley in central Georgia, Borjomi is a legendary spa destination world-renowned for its healing mineral waters, which spring naturally hot from the depths of Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park. Its mineral water, bottled since 1890, is considered a Georgian national treasure. During our stay, we'll stroll through the romantic Mineral Park and taste the thermal waters straight from the historic springs.

Day 10 - Vardzia - Bavra - Gyumri

Vardzia

Vardzia Carved into the vertical face of Mount Erusheli, Vardzia is a stunning 12th-century cave monastery city, a symbol of medieval Georgia's cultural peak under Queen Tamar. This monastic complex stretches 500 meters and reaches up to 19 levels, housing over 600 rooms including churches, wine cellars, libraries, and an intricate tunnel and irrigation system. During our exploration, we'll walk through secret tunnels and staircases, discover ancient wine cellars, and marvel at medieval frescoes.

Day 11 - Gyumri - Dilijan - Yerevan

Gyumri City Walk

Paseo por Gyumri Gyumri, Armenia's second-largest city, sits on the fertile plain of Shirak and stands out as a cultural and historical gem. Formerly known as Alexandropol and Leninakan, the city preserves an impressive collection of 19th-century architecture in its distinctive black tuff stone style. The historic center, known as Kumayri, charms with cobbled streets and the magnificent Church of the Holy Apostles. During our walk, we'll explore the lively local markets and soak in the vibrant artistic atmosphere.

Dilijan

Diliján Known as the "Little Switzerland of Armenia", Dilijan is a charming resort town in the Tavush province of northern Armenia. Surrounded by the dense forested mountains of Dilijan National Park, covering over 24,000 hectares of lush nature, this historic town is distinguished by its traditional Armenian architecture. During our stay, we'll stroll through the restored old town, taste local mineral waters, and venture along forest paths leading to centuries-old monasteries.

Day 12 - Yerevan - Garni - Geghard - Yerevan

Yerevan City Tour

City tour por Ereván A city tour of central Yerevan, the vibrant capital of Armenia, is the best way to discover its rich history and culture. Situated in the Ararat Valley, the city blends Soviet architecture, modern boulevards, and ancient monuments such as the iconic Republic Square and the impressive Cascade. During our visit, we'll walk the lively streets, explore historical landmarks, and enjoy authentic Armenian hospitality.

Garni

Garni Garni, in the Kotayk region of Armenia, is an iconic destination known for its 1st-century pagan temple, unique in the South Caucasus. Built in honor of the god Mihr, this Hellenistic temple is an exceptional example of ancient Armenian architecture. During our visit, we'll explore the temple and hike through the gorge to discover the famous "Symphony of Stones" rock formations.

Geghard

Geghard Geghard, in the Kotayk region of Armenia, is a medieval monastery declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Founded in the 4th century and partially carved into the rock, this sacred site is renowned for its impressive architecture blending nature and art. Its name means "monastery of the spear," referring to the relic said to have pierced Christ's side. During our visit, we'll tour the rock-carved chapels and admire the intricate engravings.

Day 13 - Yerevan - Echmiadzin - Zvartnots - Yerevan

Echmiadzin

Echmiadzin Echmiadzin, known as the Holy See of the Armenian Apostolic Church, is one of Armenia's holiest cities. Located in the Armavir region, it houses the Echmiadzin Cathedral, considered the world's oldest Christian cathedral, built in the 4th century. During our visit, we'll explore the majestic cathedral and immerse ourselves in the sacred atmosphere of this unique place.  

Zvartnots Temple

Templo Zvartnots A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the majestic Zvartnots Temple was built in the 7th century near Echmiadzin, Armenia, representing the pinnacle of medieval Armenian architecture. Its name means 'Temple of the Celestial Angels.' Though now in ruins after collapsing in a 10th-century earthquake, its imposing remains demonstrate the sophistication of ancient Armenia. During our exploration, we'll walk among the massive columns and admire the delicate vine and pomegranate reliefs, with Mount Ararat on the horizon.  

Day 14 - Khor Virap - Areni Cave - Noravank - Yerevan

Khor Virap

Khor Virap Khor Virap, on the Ararat Plain in Armenia, is one of the country's most iconic monasteries, with a rich history tied to Christianity. This is where St. Gregory the Illuminator was imprisoned before converting Armenia into the world's first Christian nation, and it offers spectacular views of Mount Ararat. During our visit, we'll explore the underground cells and discover the history that makes Khor Virap a sacred and unforgettable place.

Areni Cave

Cueva de Areni The Areni Cave, in the Vayots Dzor region of Armenia, is an archaeological site of great historical importance. Known as one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited sites, it is famous for the discovery of the oldest wine-making facility, dating back over 6,000 years. During our visit, we'll explore the mysteries of this ancient cave and learn about its millennia-old history.

Noravank Monastery

Monasterio de Noravank Noravank Monastery, set in a narrow canyon in the Vayots Dzor region, is a stunning 13th-century religious complex. Famous for its distinctive architecture combining intricate carvings and a two-story church, it is surrounded by imposing red cliffs. During our visit, we'll explore its elegant churches and enjoy the spectacular mountain scenery.
