Classic Caucasus Route: From Georgia to Armenia in 11 Days

This is an 11-day journey through the jewels of the South Caucasus, discovering the rich cultural and natural heritage of Georgia and Armenia. This carefully designed itinerary takes you through ancient medieval cities, centuries-old monasteries and breathtaking mountain landscapes. From modern Tbilisi to historic Yerevan, you'll experience the legendary Caucasian hospitality while exploring ancient fortresses, enjoying the renowned local cuisine and immersing yourself in millennia-old traditions that have survived the test of time. Among the highlights of the trip are the majestic Gergeti Church with Mount Kazbegi in the background, the cave city of Vardzia carved into the mountain, and the historic Khor Virap monastery with views of the mythical Mount Ararat. You'll explore the Kakheti wine region in Georgia, visit the Echmiadzin monastic complex, considered the Armenian Vatican, and marvel at the pagan temple of Garni. This trip perfectly combines history, culture, nature and gastronomy, offering an immersive experience in two of the most fascinating countries in the Caucasus.

Rustaveli Avenue

Avenida Rustaveli Rustaveli Avenue, the main artery of Tbilisi, stretches 1.5 kilometers from Freedom Square to Republic Square. This iconic street, named after the medieval poet Shota Rustaveli, houses the most prestigious buildings in the city, including the Parliament of Georgia, the Opera Theater and the National Museum, all built in neoclassical and Art Nouveau style during the 19th century. During our stroll, we will enjoy the vibrant Georgian cultural life, stop at its elegant historic cafés and admire the monumental architecture while exploring the many shops and art galleries.

Metekhi Square

Plaza de Metekhi Metekhi Square, one of the most iconic historic spots in Tbilisi, stands on a cliff with commanding views of the Mtkvari river. This landmark is dominated by the 13th-century church and the equestrian statue of King Vakhtang Gorgasali, the legendary founder of the city. The square was for centuries home to the royal palace, cementing its role as a strategic and cultural hub. Although the original church was built in the 5th century, the structure we see today is a 13th-century reconstruction. During our tour, we will enjoy stunning panoramic views of the old town and the famous bathhouse district. We will also explore the Metekhi church and delve into the fascinating history of the king whose vision established Tbilisi as Georgia's capital, forging one of the most representative sites of Georgian heritage.

Narikala Fortress

Fortaleza Narikala Narikala Fortress, the iconic symbol of Tbilisi, has dominated the city skyline since the 4th century. This ancient citadel, originally Persian and later expanded by Arabs and Georgians, rises on a steep hill overlooking the Mtkvari river and the old town. Its imposing walls and towers have witnessed the many civilizations that ruled Georgia, including the rebuilt St. Nicholas Church from the 12th century. During our visit, we will ride the cable car up to the fortress, walk its ancient defensive walls and capture stunning panoramic views of Tbilisi as the sun sets over the city.

Abanotubani

Abanotubani Abanotubani, the historic sulfur bathhouse district in the heart of old Tbilisi, represents the original core where the Georgian capital was founded. Located on the right bank of the Mtkvari river, this neighborhood is famous for its distinctive sulfur baths with brick domes emerging from the ground, witnesses to over 1,500 years of history. The natural thermal springs that bubble up from underground maintain a constant temperature of 37–40°C, and their healing properties have drawn illustrious visitors such as Alexander Pushkin and Alexandre Dumas. During our visit, we will wander these streets of legendary thermal waters and lose ourselves in the picturesque medieval alleyways that wind between the bathhouses, breathing in the most authentic essence of ancient Tbilisi.  

Anchiskhati

Anchiskhati Anchiskhati Basilica, the oldest church in Tbilisi, has been a vital testament to Georgia's Christian history since the 6th century. Located in the heart of the old town, this sandstone church, dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, takes its name from the miraculous icon of Christ (Anchiskhati) it sheltered for centuries. Its three-nave basilica architecture, typically Georgian, is complemented by medieval frescoes and a 17th-century bell tower. During our exploration, we will absorb the mystical atmosphere of the temple, listen to the ancient Georgian polyphonic chants that still echo through its walls and admire the craftsmanship of its traditional icons.  

Day 3 - Tbilisi - Alaverdi - Nekresi - Kvareli - Telavi

Alaverdi Monastery

Monasterio de Alaverdi Alaverdi Monastery, located in the Kakheti region of Georgia, is an impressive cathedral dating from the 6th century. This historic site was founded by the monk Joseph of Alaverdi and in the 11th century became one of the tallest churches in Georgia with its magnificent dome. Surrounded by vineyards, the monastery is also renowned for its winemaking tradition, deeply connecting it to the culture of the region. During our visit we will explore the majestic cathedral, learn about its rich history and enjoy the beauty of the vineyards that surround this iconic landmark of Kakheti. Nekresi Monastery

Monasterio de Nekresi Nekresi Monastery, located in the Kakheti region of Georgia, is an ancient monastic complex founded in the 4th century, making it one of the oldest Christian centers in the country. Perched on a hill overlooking the Alazani valley, Nekresi is distinguished by its small early-Christian church, its rich history and its impressive natural surroundings. This monastery has been an important spiritual and cultural refuge throughout the centuries. During our visit we will walk through its historic chapels, enjoy the panoramic views of the valley and soak up the tranquility and history that envelop this sacred place. Khareba Tunnel Winery

Bodega Khareba en tunel Nestled in the heart of the Kakheti region, Khareba Winery stands out for its extraordinary tunnel system carved into the Caucasian mountain, extending more than 7.7 kilometers at a depth of 60 meters. Originally built during the Soviet era, this underground labyrinth maintains a constant natural temperature of 12–14°C, creating ideal conditions for wine aging. The winery combines traditional Georgian winemaking methods in qvevri with modern technology, producing exceptional wines from indigenous grapes such as Saperavi and Rkatsiteli. During our visit, we will explore the mysterious tunnels torch in hand, learn about Georgia's 8,000-year winemaking history and taste a curated selection of wines while savoring the local cuisine. Ananuri

Ananuri Ananuri, an impressive medieval fortress located 66 kilometers from Tbilisi, rises majestically above the Zhinvali Reservoir on the historic Georgian Military Highway. This 13th-century architectural complex, which served as the seat of the eristavis (dukes) of Aragvi, combines defensive elements with extraordinary examples of Georgian religious architecture, highlighted by its main church with intricate stone reliefs and well-preserved frescoes. During our visit, we will explore the fortified towers, admire panoramic views of the turquoise reservoir and uncover the secrets of medieval Georgian architecture as we stroll through its ancient cobblestone courtyards.  

Gergeti Trinity Church

Trinidad de Gergeti Gergeti Trinity Church stands majestically at 2,170 meters altitude in the shadow of Mount Kazbegi (5,047 m). This iconic 14th-century church, situated in the historic Khevi region, is one of Georgia's most recognizable symbols, celebrated for its remote location and traditional Georgian architecture set against a backdrop of snow-capped Caucasus peaks. During our excursion, we will ascend by 4x4 along the winding mountain track, explore the ancient monastic complex and take in panoramic views of the surrounding glaciers and summits.  

Day 5 - Gudauri - Gori - Uplistsikhe - Akhaltsikhe

Stalin Museum

Museo de Stalin The Stalin Museum in Gori, the birthplace of the controversial Soviet leader, is one of the last museums dedicated to Josef Stalin in the world. The complex includes the original birthplace home, a Soviet palace-style building and Stalin's personal railway carriage. The exhibition houses an extensive collection of personal belongings, photographs, historical documents and the dictator's original death mask. During our visit, we will explore the rooms documenting Stalin's life from his youth in Georgia to his Soviet leadership, examine his luxurious armored railway carriage and reflect on the complex historical legacy he left in the region.  

Uplistsikhe

Uplistsikhe Located in the Kartli region of central Georgia, Uplistsikhe is an ancient rock-cut cave city dating from the first millennium BC. This extraordinary archaeological complex, considered one of the oldest settlements in the Caucasus, was an important religious and commercial center on the historic Silk Road. Its architectural structures include pagan temples, Christian basilicas and civic buildings that reflect the unique fusion of Christian and pagan styles. The city is notable for its street system, secret tunnels and an exceptionally well-preserved Roman theater. During our visit we will explore the ancient wine cellars, walk through stone-carved alleyways and marvel at the panoramic views of the Mtkvari river from atop this natural acropolis, traveling back through more than 3,000 years of Caucasian history.  

Day 6 - Akhaltsikhe - Vardzia - Khertvisi - Bavra - Gyumri

Vardzia

Vardzia Carved into the sheer vertical face of Mount Erusheli, Vardzia emerges as a breathtaking 12th-century cave monastery-city, symbol of the cultural zenith of medieval Georgia during the reign of Queen Tamar. This monastic complex stretches 500 meters and reaches up to 19 levels, housing more than 600 rooms including churches, wine cellars, libraries and an intricate tunnel and irrigation system. The site is especially notable for the Church of the Dormition, which preserves exceptional 12th-century frescoes including a famous portrait of Queen Tamar. During our exploration, we will traverse the secret tunnels and staircases connecting the various chambers, discover ancient wine cellars and marvel at medieval frescoes that have survived earthquakes and centuries of history in this architectural jewel carved from the rock.

Echmiadzin

This important spiritual and cultural center boasts impressive architecture and a rich heritage reflecting Armenia's deep Christian history. It is a must-visit destination for history and religion enthusiasts. St. Gayane Church

  St. Gayane Church, located in the city of Echmiadzin, Armenia, is a magnificent example of classical Armenian architecture. Dilijan

Diliján Known as the ""Little Switzerland of Armenia"", Dilijan is a charming spa town in the Tavush province in northern Armenia.
