Ateni Sioni: the church with the oldest Georgian alphabet inscription

In a valley 10 km south of Gori, a 7th-century stone church holds one of Georgia's most astonishing secrets: the earliest known inscriptions of the Georgian alphabet. The church of Ateni Sioni is a place of pilgrimage for historians, linguists and lovers of medieval Caucasian art.

History and origins: the cradle of the Georgian alphabet

Built in the early 7th century, its walls bear inscriptions in Nuskhuri dated to 835 AD — the oldest of their kind — and the first documented examples of Mkhedruli, the Georgian alphabet still used today, dated to around 980 AD. The name Sioni derives from Mount Zion in Jerusalem.

Unique architecture: four-apsed cross plan

Ateni Sioni is an outstanding example of the four-apsed cross plan style typical of 7th-century Georgian art. The central dome rises on four pillars creating a space of great verticality. The local sandstone, with its golden tone that darkens over the centuries, gives the building an inimitable patina of authenticity.

Medieval frescoes: intact art from the 11th century

The interior preserves fragments of 11th- and 12th-century frescoes from the Georgian Golden Age, depicting scenes from the life of Christ and saints. Their state of preservation is notable: the church has not undergone major restorations that would have altered its authenticity.
