Hatsvali: Svaneti's small ski resort with views of Mount Ushba

Unlike the great European ski resorts, Hatsvali has something none of them can match: runs with direct views of the legendary Mount Ushba (4,710 m), considered one of the most fearsome and beautiful peaks in the Caucasus, and medieval Svan towers rising among the pines. A landscape that makes you forget you are skiing.

The resort: small, authentic and growing

Hatsvali opened in 2010 when the Georgian government installed the cable car rising from Mestia. The resort has runs for beginners and intermediates between 1,900 and 2,350 metres altitude. The atmosphere is calm and uncommercial, very different from the lively Gudauri: here you ski without queues and with unrivalled views.

The resort is still developing: the infrastructure is basic but functional. A day pass costs around 40–60 GEL (11–17 €), less than at Gudauri.

The cable car from Mestia: the most spectacular experience

The cable car rising from Mestia to Hatsvali is an attraction in itself. During the 15-minute ascent you take in the slate rooftops of Mestia with its medieval Svan towers (koshki), the conifer forests and, on clear days, the twin peaks of Ushba. It is a perspective of Svaneti you cannot get any other way.

Hatsvali in summer: hiking and nature

In the warm season (June–September), Hatsvali is the perfect base for high-altitude hiking in Svaneti. From the slopes you can access routes towards Chalaadi Glacier and other summits of the massif. Combined with Mestia and Chalaadi Glacier, the area is one of Georgia's most complete mountain destinations.
