The mystery of its origins

The Maiden Tower is one of the most enigmatic monuments in the Caucasus. It is estimated to have been built between the 6th and 12th centuries, though some theories trace it back to ancient times. Its exact function is still debated: defensive tower, lighthouse, Zoroastrian astronomical observatory or ritual structure. No theory has been definitively confirmed, which adds an irresistible layer of mystery to any visit.

Unique architecture

The tower has a cylindrical shape with a distinctive lateral projection on its south face, the purpose of which is also unclear. Built with brick and mortar, it comprises eight floors connected by a very steep interior staircase. The small windows and interior rooms suggest multiple uses throughout its history.

In 2000, the Maiden Tower was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Walled City of Baku ensemble.
