Khor Virap: monastery, Christian history and Mount Ararat

The monastery of Khor Virap is probably the most photographed site in Armenia. Located on the Ararat plain, just a few kilometres from the Turkish border, it combines fundamental Christian history with the most spectacular views of Mount Ararat (5,137 m) in the entire country.

The Story of Saint Gregory the Illuminator

Khor Virap, which means "deep pit" in Armenian, takes its name from the underground dungeon where King Tiridates III imprisoned Saint Gregory the Illuminator for 13 years for preaching Christianity. In 301 AD, following Gregory's release and the king's miraculous healing, Armenia became the first nation in the world to adopt Christianity as its state religion.

Monastery Architecture

The current monastic complex dates mainly from the 17th century and includes the Church of Saint Astvatsatsin as its main building. Visitors can descend via a steep metal ladder into the original dungeon — a claustrophobic and intense experience that connects directly to the origins of Armenian Christianity. Smaller chapels and defensive walls around the enclosure complete the ensemble.

Religious Festivals at Khor Virap

The monastery hosts important annual celebrations, especially the Exaltation of the Holy Cross in September, when thousands of pilgrims and worshippers come from all over Armenia. At Easter and other festivals the atmosphere is particularly moving.

How to Visit Khor Virap

Khor Virap is located about 45 km south of Yerevan, in the Ararat province. Admission is free. To make the most of your visit, combine it with the Kakavaberd fortress, which is in the same area. The best light for photographing Ararat is in the early morning.
