Gveleti Waterfalls: hiking in the Kazbegi mountains

A few kilometres from Stepantsminda (Kazbegi), among the imposing mountains of the Greater Caucasus, the village of Gveleti hides one of the most rewarding hiking excursions in the region. Its waterfalls — the large and the small — tumble from volcanic rock cliffs in a landscape of wild, primal beauty.

The waterfalls: large and small

There are two waterfalls:

  • Small waterfall: the closest to the village, reachable in 30–40 minutes of easy walking. It drops about 20 metres into a natural pool
  • Large waterfall: requires an additional 60–90 minutes of steeper ascent. The drop exceeds 40 metres and creates a cool mist in summer

Both are connected by marked trails passing through pine forests and alpine meadows with views of the snow-capped Caucasus peaks.

How to get to Gveleti from Stepantsminda

Gveleti is 6 km south of Stepantsminda along the Georgian Military Highway. By taxi from the village it is about 10 minutes and 10–15 GEL. You can also walk from Stepantsminda in about 90 minutes, following the Terek River.

Combining Gveleti with Gergeti Trinity Church

The most complete excursion in the Kazbegi area combines the Gveleti waterfalls in the morning (cooler temperatures) with the ascent to Gergeti Trinity Church in the afternoon. This is the best way to make the most of a full day in Stepantsminda.

Is the hike to the Gveleti waterfalls difficult?

The small waterfall is very easy, suitable for anyone with good footwear. The large waterfall requires a bit more effort (steep ascent) but is accessible for anyone with moderate fitness. No special equipment is needed.

How long does it take to visit both waterfalls?

To see both waterfalls and enjoy the scenery, allow 3 to 4 hours in total from the Gveleti car park. For the small waterfall only, 1.5–2 hours is enough.

Is there an entrance fee for the Gveleti waterfalls?

No, access to the waterfalls is free. There are no services along the route (no shops or water sources), so bring water and snacks from Stepantsminda.
