Best Time to Visit the Caucasus: When to Go and What to Expect

The Caucasus is a year-round destination, but each season offers a very different experience. Choosing the right time to travel can make the difference between a good visit and an extraordinary one. This seasonal guide helps you find the best time to visit Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan based on your interests and the type of trip you're looking for.

Spring in the Caucasus (March–May): the awakening of the landscape

Spring is arguably the best time to visit the Caucasus in general terms. Temperatures are mild (10–20°C in the valleys, cooler in the mountains), the landscapes are at their finest with alpine flowers and green meadows, and trails begin to open after winter. Tourist numbers are also lower than in summer, and prices are more affordable.

May is the ideal month: everything is open, good weather is guaranteed, and the region is at its greenest. It also coincides with the Tbilisi Wine Festival (May) and various cultural festivals in Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Summer in the Caucasus (June–August): high season

Summer is the high season for tourism in the Caucasus. Temperatures in the valleys and cities can be hot (30–35°C in Baku and Yerevan), but in the mountains the climate is cool and pleasant. It is the best time for high-altitude hiking, including the Mestia–Ushguli trek and ascents of Kazbek or Aragats.

The summer festivals — Vardavar in Armenia (July), Tbilisoba in Georgia (October, though summer has pre-events), the Baku Jazz Festival — also make summer a strong option for cultural tourism. The downside: more tourists and higher prices, especially in July–August.

Autumn in the Caucasus (September–November): the most photogenic season

Autumn is the favourite season of many seasoned Caucasus travellers. The reasons are many: the forest colours in red, gold and orange tones create spectacular landscapes; September and October are the time of the grape harvest (Rtveli) in the Kakheti vineyards; temperatures remain pleasant and tourist numbers drop compared to summer.

October is especially recommended: stable weather, autumn landscapes at their peak and mid-season prices. Wine tourism in Georgia reaches its high point in September–October.

Winter in the Caucasus (December–February): snow and skiing

Winter transforms the Caucasus into a different kind of destination. The mountains are blanketed in snow and ski resorts open their slopes: Gudauri (Georgia) is the most popular, with excellent powder snow and modern facilities. Shahdag (Azerbaijan) and Tsaghkadzor (Armenia) round out the offering.

In the cities, winter brings a more intimate and peaceful atmosphere, without the summer crowds. Tbilisi's sulphur baths are especially appealing in the cold. Prices in non-ski areas are the lowest of the year.
