Gergeti Trinity Church: the Georgian church at the foot of Mount Kazbek

If you had to choose a single image of Georgia, it would probably be this: a small solitary stone church, wrapped in clouds, on a green cliff, with the snow-capped volcano of Mount Kazbek (5,047 m) in the background. Gergeti Trinity Church — Tsminda Sameba in Georgian, meaning "Holy Trinity" — is the photograph of Georgia.

History: a refuge in the heights of the Caucasus

The church was built in the 14th century, during the period of greatest splendour in Georgian ecclesiastical architecture. Its location was no accident: high on an inaccessible cliff, it served as a refuge for the relics and sacred treasures of the valley churches when invaders came. The attached bell tower dates from the same period.

The church is dedicated to the Holy Trinity and is an active place of pilgrimage: at Whitsun, thousands of Georgians make the journey up on foot in procession. The religious rites celebrated there maintain traditions of Georgian Christianity dating back to the 4th century.

The ascent route: on foot or by 4x4

There are two options for reaching Gergeti Trinity Church from the village of Stepantsminda (Kazbegi):

  • On foot: a marked trail of 2.5 km with 560 metres of elevation gain. The ascent takes 1–1.5 hours. The path is steep and sometimes slippery; appropriate footwear is essential
  • By 4x4: Stepantsminda taxi drivers take you up the track in about 20 minutes (30–40 GEL return). A comfortable option, but you miss the experience of the walk

What else to see in Kazbegi beyond the Trinity Church

Stepantsminda (the Kazbegi village) offers much more than the church:

  • The Dariali Gorge 15 km away, with walls of 1,800 metres
  • Trekking routes to Gergeti Glacier (5–6 hours round trip)
  • Ascent of Mount Kazbek (for experienced mountaineers only)
  • Kazbegi regional museum with local ethnography

Combine it with Ananuri Fortress on the way back to Tbilisi for a complete route along the Georgian Military Highway.
