Becho, Georgia: The Svaneti Village with Views of Mount Ushba
Becho is one of those villages that travellers discover almost by chance and end up becoming one of their favourite places in the Caucasus. Located in the region of Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti, in north-western Georgia, this small locality offers the quintessence of Georgian rural tourism: majestic mountains, silence, genuine hospitality and the ever-present shadow of Mount Ushba, one of the most impressive and iconic peaks in the Caucasus.
Svaneti: the cultural context of Becho
Becho is part of the region of Svaneti, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its characteristic medieval defensive towers (koshkebi) that rise above the rooftops of stone houses. Built between the 9th and 12th centuries, these towers served as refuges during invasions and family disputes, and are the most recognisable symbol of Svan culture.
The Svans — the people who inhabit Svaneti — preserve their own language (Svan, a Kartvelian language with no written form), their polyphonic musical traditions and a way of life that in many respects has not changed radically in centuries.
Hiking and mountaineering from Becho
Becho is an excellent starting point for various hiking routes in the Greater Caucasus. The most popular route leads to the Chalaati Glacier, an impressive hanging glacier reachable in 3–4 hours of walking from the village. The sight of the glacier cascading between walls of black rock, with Ushba in the background, is overwhelmingly beautiful.
For mountaineers, Becho is also a classic base camp for attempting the ascent of Mount Ushba (4,710 m), one of the most difficult and dangerous climbs in the Caucasus, reserved exclusively for very experienced climbers with a local guide.
How to get to Becho
Becho is about 15 km from Mestia, the capital of Svaneti, connected by a mountain road (accessible by ordinary car in summer; may require 4x4 in winter). From Tbilisi there are flights to Mestia (45 minutes) or direct marshrutkas (9–10 hours). The Mestia–Ushguli trekking route passes close to Becho.
Frequently asked questions
Is there accommodation in Becho?
Yes, though limited. Becho has several family guesthouses that offer a room with breakfast and dinner included. Svan hospitality is legendary: hosts usually prepare traditional local dishes. It is advisable to book in advance during high season (July–August).
How is Becho different from Mestia?
Mestia is the capital of Svaneti and has more tourist infrastructure (hotels, restaurants, shops). Becho is much smaller, quieter and more authentic, perfect for those who want to escape the tourist trail and immerse themselves in rural Svan life. Ideally combine both: base in Mestia, day trip to Becho.
When is the best time to visit Becho?
June to September is the ideal hiking season. In July and August the weather is more stable but there are more visitors. In June and September there are fewer people and the scenery is spectacular. In winter Becho becomes isolated by snow and access can be very difficult.
