Heydar Aliyev Cultural Centre: Zaha Hadid's Masterpiece in Baku
The Heydar Aliyev Cultural Centre is the most impressive work of contemporary architecture in Azerbaijan and one of the most photographed buildings in the world. Designed by Iraqi-British architect Zaha Hadid and completed in 2012, this building with its flowing white forms in the modern quarter of Baku has received the most prestigious awards in international architectural design.
Zaha Hadid's Design
Zaha Hadid conceived the centre as a building without corners or right angles: a succession of folds and organic curves that create a unique sculptural appearance. The building's white skin, made of fibreglass-reinforced plastic, flows seamlessly from the ground to the roof, erasing the boundaries between facade, rooftop and outer plaza. This revolutionary design earned it the Design of the Year award from the Design Museum London in 2014.
Cultural Spaces
The interior houses:
- Auditorium with a capacity of 1,000 people, hosting concerts, opera and state events.
- Exhibition halls with permanent and temporary displays on Azerbaijani history and culture.
- Library and spaces for conferences and seminars.
- Museum dedicated to Heydar Aliyev, the first president of independent Azerbaijan.
