Prometheus Cave: Georgia's underground wonder

Greek mythology places the punishment of Prometheus in the Caucasus mountains: chained to a rock, the god who stole fire for humanity suffered eternally. Very near the spot where tradition locates that torment, nature spent millions of years creating a wonder worthy of the gods: Prometheus Cave, Georgia's most impressive underground attraction.

History of the discovery and name

The cave was discovered in 1984 near Tskaltubo and Kutaisi. Officially it is called Kumistavi Cave, but the Georgian government renamed it Prometheus Cave to boost its tourist appeal, drawing on the mythological tradition that places the Titan's punishment in the Caucasus.

What to see inside: 1.4 km of geological wonders

The cave has 1.4 km of accessible galleries divided into six evocatively named chambers:

  • Wedding Night Hall: white and orange calcite columns
  • Love Hall: natural heart-shaped formations
  • Oryx Hall: with the cave's largest stalactite (7 metres)
  • Underground lakes with transparent blue-green water
  • Petrified waterfalls of calcium carbonate

Artificial lighting enhances the natural colours of the formations: whites, oranges, browns and greys in a hypnotic visual spectacle.

The boat ride: the most special experience

At the end of the tour, visitors can board a small boat that travels along a section of the underground lake for about 10 minutes. Watching the stalactites reflected in the still water, with classical music playing softly, is one of the most memorable experiences in Georgia.
