Tavushi Marz: nature, culture and hospitality in northeast Armenia

Tavushi Marz — the province of Tavush — is the most densely forested region of Armenia and one of the most authentic destinations in the Caucasus. Mountains, rivers, ancient forests and a vibrant local culture make this province far more than a mere transit corridor to Georgia.

Nature: forests, rivers and biodiversity

Dilijan National Park sits at the heart of Tavushi Marz and is Armenia's largest national park. Its deciduous forests of beech, oak and hornbeam are ecosystems of great value, with wildlife including brown bears, Caucasian lynx and over 150 bird species. The Aghstev River and its tributaries offer trout fishing and canyoning routes.

Tavushi Marz is home to some of Armenia's most photographed monasteries. Haghartsin (10th–13th centuries) and Goshavank stand out for their architecture and their forested setting. The caravanserai of Sulema adds a Silk Road dimension to the province's historical heritage.

Local gastronomy

The cuisine of Tavushi Marz is rich in fresh mountain produce: Aghstev trout, honey from local hives, wild berries, aromatic herbs and Ijevan's famous mulberry brandy. Rural guesthouses serve breakfast and dinner made with home-grown ingredients that are an experience in themselves.
