History of St. Stepanos Monastery

Founded according to tradition by the Apostle Bartholomew in the 1st century AD, the current monastery dates mainly from the 9th century, with later additions and restorations in the 14th and 19th centuries. It has survived invasions, earthquakes, and periods of abandonment to become a symbol of Armenian cultural resilience today.

Architecture and Decoration

The monastery is renowned for its main Church of St. Stepanos, covered in exquisite stone-carved reliefs depicting biblical scenes, figures of saints, and interlaced geometric motifs. The blend of Armenian, Persian, and Georgian styles reflects centuries of cultural exchange along the Caucasian border.

Annual Armenian Pilgrimage

Every year in July, thousands of Armenians from the diaspora and from Armenia travel to the Vardavar festival at St. Stepanos, one of the most important Armenian religious events in the world. The celebration lasts several days and transforms the Araxes valley into an extraordinary gathering of faith, music, and tradition.

Getting There from Armenia

From Yerevan, the monastery is about 300 km away, crossing the border at Agarak-Norduz. An Iranian visa is required. Many specialist agencies like Destino Cáucaso organise combined Armenia-Iran tours that include St. Stepanos.
