Orbelian Caravanserai: Armenia's Silk Road Frozen in Time

At 2,410 meters above sea level, at the Selim Pass crossing the mountains of Vayots Dzor in southern Armenia, stands a building that has withstood the harshest winters of the Caucasus for nearly 700 years: the Orbelian Caravanserai, also known as the Selim Caravanserai. Built in 1332 by Prince Chesar Orbelian, it is the best-preserved medieval caravanserai in Armenia and one of the most evocative testaments to the historic Silk Road that connected China to the Mediterranean.

The Selim Caravanserai, built in black basalt in 1332, is the best-preserved in Armenia and a key node of the Silk Road.

History: An Oasis on the Silk Road

For centuries, caravanserais were the hotels of the Silk Road: structures built at a day's march apart to provide merchants and their animals with shelter, water, and safe rest. The Orbelian Caravanserai was built at one of Armenia's most difficult passes, over 2,400 meters high, where camel caravans loaded with silk, spices, and precious metals braved the extreme cold of the Caucasus before descending toward Lake Sevan.

Architecture: Black Basalt and the Ornate Arch

The caravanserai is built entirely of volcanic black basalt, the most abundant material in the region, which gives it a somber and powerful appearance. The entrance portal is decorated with inscriptions in Armenian and Persian that document the construction date and the patron's name. The interior is divided into a central vaulted hall for people and side chambers for pack animals, all organized around a central corridor lit by oculi in the vault.

How to Visit the Orbelian Caravanserai

The caravanserai is located on the road linking Yeghegnadzor and Martuni, at the Selim Pass. Most visitors include it on a circular route from Yerevan that combines the cave village of Khndzoresk, the Armenian Stonehenge of Zorats Karer, and Noravank Monastery in Vayots Dzor. Travelling by private or rented car is the most practical option.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a caravanserai and what was it used for?

A caravanserai was an inn or hostel built along trade routes to provide free shelter to merchants and their animals. On the Silk Road, they were built every 30–40 km (one caravan day's march) to facilitate trade between Asia and Europe.

Is the Orbelian Caravanserai well preserved?

Yes, it is one of the best preserved in Armenia. The robustness of the black basalt and the restoration carried out in recent decades have kept the structure nearly intact, including the vaults and the original decorated portal.

What is the best time to visit the Selim Caravanserai?

June to October. The Selim Pass is at 2,410 meters and may be snow-covered from November to May, making access difficult or impossible. In summer the scenery is spectacular and access is always guaranteed.
