Khndzoresk: Armenia's Most Fascinating Cave Village
In the mountains of southern Armenia, near the town of Goris, a rocky hollow hides one of the most surreal landscapes in the Caucasus: Khndzoresk, a village where thousands of people lived for centuries in homes carved directly into sandstone, and whose cave dwellings remained inhabited until the first half of the 20th century. Today, old Khndzoresk is a stone ghost town over which stretches a suspension bridge connecting both sides of the canyon — one of the most photogenic crossings in Armenia.
History: From Cave Village to Symbol of Resistance
The origins of Khndzoresk as a cave settlement date back to the Bronze Age, though its golden age was between the 17th and 19th centuries, when it became one of the most populated villages in Armenia with over 15,000 inhabitants. Its location in a deep canyon and its inaccessible caves made it a bastion of resistance during the Persian and Turkish invasions of the 18th century: Armenian warriors used the caves of Khndzoresk as an impregnable natural fortress.
The Suspension Bridge: 160 Meters Above the Void
The most striking feature for modern visitors is the 160-meter-long suspension bridge that crosses the canyon about 35 meters above the rocky floor. Built in 2012 to connect new Khndzoresk with the old, the bridge offers breathtaking views of the labyrinth of caves in the canyon walls. Crossing it requires some nerve, but the views from the middle more than make up for it.
The Cave Dwellings
Once across the bridge, you can explore the labyrinth of caves carved into the soft rock. Some are simple niches of a few square meters; others are multi-chamber complexes with fireplaces, icon niches, and integrated stables. The cave church, carved into the heart of the rock, is especially impressive.
Getting to Khndzoresk
Khndzoresk is about 8 km from Goris, the most important city in southern Armenia. Taxis from Goris go to the trailhead. By private car, the route is well signposted from the main road. The visit pairs perfectly with the Armenian Stonehenge of Zorats Karer and the Caravanserai of Orbelian on a two-day route through southern Armenia.
